IT raids on jewellers, garment suppliers

MUMBAI, JUNE 24. The Income Tax Department today conducted simultaneous raids on at least 40 business establishments in Mumbai and Pune.

The establishments raided include jewellers, suppliers to the film industry and garment dealers, said well-placed IT sources. Market sources confirmed the raid on one semi-precious stones dealer in Dhanji Street in South Mumbai and another film industry supplier, but officials in the Director-General (Investigations) Office in Mumbai did not wish to reveal details.

The IT officers, after examining the books of accounts of the film materials supplier, called upon filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali to verify how the transactions were made.

Sources clarified and stressed that there was no raid on the filmmaker and that the IT sleuths had only sought his cooperation since the supplier had also given some material to the director for some of his film sets.
