Announcement on job quota for Muslims in a day or two

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JUNE 24. Five per cent reservations to Muslims in government jobs will be announced in two to three days. All legal formalities in this connection have been completed, said the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajashekhar Reddy.

He was addressing members of the United Muslim Forum, A.P, at Dar-ul-Uloom, the well-known religious seminary, situated in Shivarampally on Thursday evening. The Ministers, Mohd. Ali Shabbir, Fareeduddin and Sabita Indira Reddy, were also present on the occasion.

The Congress Government was committed to implementing the promises made in its manifesto. The secular fabric of the country would be maintained at all costs and justice would be done to all linguistic minorities, the Chief Minister assured.

Referring to the request earlier made by the Forum members, he said the Centre had taken a decision about repealing of the POTA. His Government would also consider doing away with the A.P Control of Organised Crime Act.

The A.P. Minorities Finance Corporation would be strengthened and sanction of direct loans would be ensured since banks were not coming forward to provide matching grants. Steps would also be taken to uplift dalits, backward classes, grijans and other OBCs.

Dr. Reddy thanked the Forum leaders for campaigning in favour of the Congress.

Moulana Hameeduddin Aquil Hussmi, Forum president, said Muslims had played an important role in the downfall of the Telugu Desam government. Moulana Aquil later presented a cheque for Rs. 21,000 contributed by the Dar-ul-Uloom teachers to the Chief Minister for the cause of free power supply to farmers.

Moulana Rahim Qureshi, Forum vice-president, presented a memorandum to the Chief Minister seeking protection of minorities. Abdul Basit Anwar, Forum vice president, welcomed the gathering.
