`Hyderabad Air' launched

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JUNE 24. `Hyderabad Air', a public education campaign highlighting measures to contain the increasing threat of air pollution was launched by the Winrock International India here on Thursday.

The campaign in the city has the support of United States Agency for International Development (USAID), United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and administered by National Renewable Energy Laboratories, U.S.

Speaking to presspersons, Sandeep Ganesh, project advisor, said the campaign was aimed at raising awareness on the relationship between outdoor air quality and human health.

It seeks to encourage citizens' involvement and recommends certain basic individual actions to improve the ambient air.

The actions recommended as part of the campaign include usage of pool cars, planting of trees, stress on travel by public transport, avoiding pollution causing autos and taxis, proper maintenance of vehicles and combining vehicle trips whenever possible.

John Smith-Sreen, an official with USAID, said the outreach campaign was supported by rigorous scientific study of air quality in the city and translateed those findings into practical suggestions. "The outreach material is meant to create awareness and stimulate action to enhance the quality of life here," he said.

K.D.Sibold of USEPA described fine particles emitted primarily by the transportation sector as significant contributors to local pollution. "These cause asthma and other respiratory illness," she cautioned. Adam Chambers of NREL also participated in the programme.

The USEPA and USAID along with Indian technical experts were involved in hosting two policy makers meetings, one in the city and the other in New Delhi, to discus the findings of an Integrated Environmental Strategies (IES) programme.
