Second accused in double murder held

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JUNE 24. Bapi Dutta, the second accused in the murder of Lieutenant-General Harnam Singh Seth and his wife at their Vasant Enclave residence here, was arrested from Howrah in West Bengal in the wee hours of Thursday. The prime accused, Bharat Bhandari's brother-in-law, is still being questioned for his suspected involvement in the case.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West Delhi), Deependra Pathak, a police team has secured the transit remand of Bapi Dutta from a Kolkata court. He along with Bharat Bhandari had allegedly murdered the elderly couple on Sunday. Bapi would be brought to Delhi on Friday.

The police said after being convicted and having served the sentence in a burglary case in 1995, Bharat had gone to Gorakhpur near Indo-Nepal border where lived till 2000. He then returned and started living away from his parents in Vasant Gaon, where he met Bapi alias Raju and had become friends with him.

Acting on a feedback from the Uttar Pradesh police that according to Bharat, his brother-in-law, Sohan Singh, had masterminded the robbery-cum-murder, the South-West Delhi police picked him up for questioning. While his interrogation is still on, the police are awaiting Bharat's arrival so that the two can be confronted to know the truth. The police said Bharat, who had fled to Gorakhpur after murdering General Seth and his wife, had once called up Sohan from there, which helped them track him down. Bharat, along with a police team, would arrive in the Capital this late evening. "The suspects would be put to joint interrogation," said Mr. Pathak.
