NEW DELHI, JUNE 24. A gang allegedly involved in robbing courier agents has been smashed by the Anti-Auto Theft Squad of the South-West Delhi Police. Two persons have been arrested in this connection and robbed bank drafts worth Rs. 1.3 lakhs have been recovered from them. Following a tip-off, a trap was laid near Sangam cinema in R.K. Puram on June 22. One of the suspects appeared on the scene around 8 p.m. and was arrested. The suspect, identified as Mohammad Rafiq, an alleged bad character of I.P. Estate police station, was found to be in possession of five bank drafts worth Rs. 1 lakh. At his instance, the police arrested his associate, Rashid Hussain, from whom bank drafts worth Rs. 30,000 were recovered. During interrogation, the accused revealed that they used to target courier agents and take away their bags after throwing chilly powder in their eyes. They then used to take out the bank drafts from their bags and sell them further at 15 per cent of the draft value. The accused also revealed that on June 16, Rafiq and his associates -- Vishal, Neetu and Rashid -- robbed a bag from courier agent, Raju Khattar, of M/S Madhur Carrier Servies at Paharganj in Central Delhi. They managed to lay their hands on bank drafts worth Rs. 5 lakhs. Vishal gave bank drafts worth Rs. 1 lakh to Rafiq for getting it encashed.
