No decision on new DTC chief yet

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JUNE 24. Pending a bureaucratic reshuffle after the formal takeover by the new Chief Secretary from July 1, the Sheila Dikshit Government is unlikely to take a final decision on who would succeed A.J.S. Sawhney, Chairman of the Delhi Transport Corporation, who retires this month-end. The Commissioner (Transport), Rajeev Talwar, is likely to be given additional charge till a new incumbent is appointed.

Insiders in the Delhi Government said a decision on new DTC chairman was expected this week. A meeting to discuss the matter has been summoned by the Transport Minister, Haroon Yusuf, tomorrow and it is likely that Mr. Talwar in all likelihood would be asked to take additional charge of the Corporation till further orders. It is understood that the Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, was of the view that no major changes or new appointments be made till the new Chief Secretary takes over. The former Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, S. Reghunathan, who is presently posted as Secretary (Animal Husbandry) with the Union Government, is tipped to take over as the new Chief Secretary of Delhi.

A large number of officials who have returned from Central deputation or after having completed their tenure in other Union Territories are awaiting posting in the Delhi Government. The Government has been facing a shortage of good officers and the situation has been further complicated with the retirement of a number of senior bureaucrats during the last few months. Among the senior IAS officers awaiting posting in the Delhi Government include K.S. Mehra, Pradeep Singh, Madhavan Kutty and Arvind Ray. They may be accommodated in prime posts as many of them have a good track record.
