BANGALORE, JUNE 24. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) on Wednesday signed an agreement with the Hyderabad-based Ramkey Infrastructure Ltd. to set up two scientific landfills at Kannahalli for effective solid waste management. Following a Supreme Court order directing all metros, including Bangalore, to have scientific landfills ready by December 31, 2003, the Mahanagara Palike Council has permitted the firm to go ahead with the project. According to apress release, the Mahanagara Palike has provided 29 acres of land to the firm for setting up the facility in Kannahalli. Though it was earlier planned to provide land (for landfills) in Kyalsanahalli, it has now been decided to set up two landfills in Kannahalli. The project has been given to the firm on a long-term build-operate-transfer basis. The Mahanagara Palike will own the landfills and Ramkey will be paid the tipping fees for managing the facility. The Mahanagara Palike will provide over 1,000 tonnes of garbage to the firm daily and pay Rs. 189 as tipping fee. The firm will segregate the garbage and convert it into compost. The inert waste (plastic waste that cannot go into compost) will be scientifically buried in the landfill. "This will make Bangalore a pioneer in effective solid waste management. The fee is calculated for every tonne of the inert waste and not the entire garbage," the release said. The Mahanagara Palike is considering a proposal to generate power of six mega watts from over 1,000 tonnes of garbage, the release has said.
