BANGALORE, JUNE 24. Many Bangaloreans going back home on Thursday evening had more than suffocating fumes and jam-packed roads to contend with there were no streetlights. People going towards Cox Town, Wheelers Road, Banaswadi and areas connected by Hennur Main Road as well as those travelling towards Indiranagar, HAL II Stage and Beniganahalli and people living in Vijayanagar and Chandra Layout, were the most affected. Angry residents in these places complained that electricity had been going off and on since 6 p.m. Most said that the officials of Bangalore Electricity Supply Company in the area were unavailable or had switched off their mobile phones. But officials at the electricity supply company's Complaint Cell told The Hindu that load shedding had been resorted to in the north eastern and central areas because of problems on a Hoody line. "A 66 kVA line developed a problem on Wednesday, a transformer tripped and engineers have been trying to set it right. But the system became too heated so they have resorted to cyclic 30-minute load shedding in these areas," the officials said. Power supply to Richmond Town, Richmond Road and surroundings had also been affected, they said. About the problem in the Vijayanagar-Chandra Layout area, they said another 66 kVA line failed at WIDIA station. "A wire got cut on the Nelamangala-Peenya line at about 6.30 p.m. today. That is why there is a problem there." They said repair work on the Hoody line work would take some more hours. "Load shedding will continue till 10 p.m. after which the load on the system reduces," they added. Officials of the electricity supply company in the Peenya area said that they were trying to ensure alternate supply. "As much as 90 per cent of power has been restored but some houses are yet to be connected."
