Soumyadeep scripts a memorable Indian win

NEW DELHI, JUNE 25. Soumyadeep Roy scripted India's memorable 3-1 victory over England in the men's team final of the 16th Commonwealth table tennis championship in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday night.

According to information received here on Friday, the former National champion won two matches and put the finishing touches to India's maiden title-triumph in the competition.

England, which had beaten India in the final of the previous edition in New Delhi, took the lead when veteran Alan Cooke overpowered National champion A. Sharath Kamal in straight sets.

Roy levelled the score after staving off the loss of the opening game against Bradley Billington. Thereafter, Subhajit Saha put India ahead by dismissing Andrew Rushton in quick time. In the crucial fourth match, Roy rallied from 1-2 to take the next two sets and dash England's dream of a 10th title. Wales defeated Australia 3-0 to take the bronze.

Singapore took the women team title after blanking host Malaysia.

In the singles, top seed Kamal set up a revenge-clash with Alan Cooke after winning the opening round 11-8, 11-7, 11-6, 11-8 against Sri Lanka's Chalitha Ranjana. Cooke made it after beating Canada's Pradeepan Peter-Paul in five sets. Subhajit Saha rallied brilliantly after being two sets down to stop England's Craig Byrant 9-11, 4-11, 11-5, 11-2, 11-9, 11-8.

Men's team championship (final): India bt England 3-1 (A. Sharath Kamal lost to Alan Cooke 6-11, 8-11, 9-11; Soumyadeep Roy bt Bradley Billington 9-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-8; Subhajit Saha bt Andrew Rushton 11-8, 11-7, 11-6; Roy bt Cooke 11-4, 9-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-6). Third place playoff: Wales bt Australia 3-0.

Women's team championship (final): Singapore bt Malaysia 3-0 (Li Jia Wei bt Ng Sock Khim 11-6, 11-4, 11-6; Zhang Xue Ling bt Beh Lee Wei 11-3, 9-11, 11-8, 13-11; Tan Paey Fern bt Beh Lee Fong 5-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-3). Third place playoff: Australia.
