Shimoga
By Our Special Correspondent
SHIMOGA, JUNE 25. The Minister for Municipal Administration, S.R. More, has convened a meeting on Monday in Bangalore to discuss the anomalies in the Self-assessment Scheme for property tax and find solutions to them. Stating this at a press conference, the State BJP General Secretary and MLA from Shimoga, K.S. Eshwarappa, said here on Thursday that the meeting was being convened in the light of the debate held on the Floor of the House. He said apart from the legislators interested, the representatives of the taxpayers associations in the State would attend the meeting. He said when the controversial and "unscientific'' scheme came up for discussion in the Legislative Assembly, the Minister, P.G.R. Sindhia, promised that a solution would be found. "But the controversy has continued as the Minister did not announce any decision on the issue,'' he added. He said now that Mr. More had offered to convene a meeting to discuss the issue it was expected that it would be possible to suggest changes to the scheme to make it acceptable. He demanded that municipal bodies continue to collect property tax till the new scheme was amended. Mr. Eshwarappa demanded that the houses constructed unauthorisedly on Government land be regularised soon and rights granted to the owners. He asked the Government to institute a probe into the alleged irregularities while carrying out repairs to main roads in the city. He said though financial assistance had been obtained from NABARD for the work on five main roads, only three main roads had been taken up.
