KSRTC gets award

Bangalore June 25. The World Environment Foundation has selected Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation for the Golden Peacock Eco Innovation Award for 2004. The award was presented by Madhav Mehra, President of World Environment Foundation at Palampur, Himachal Pradesh. M.V.Murthy, Director (Personnel and Environment), KSRTC, received the award. The award won by KSRTC for the second year in succession is in recognition of its innovative efforts on the use of bio fuel, fitting buses with diesel particulate filters and introduction of alternative fuels.

`Release crop insurance'

Hubli June 25. The Janata Dal (Secular) leader and MLC, Basavaraj Bommai, today asked the Kerala Government to immediately release crop insurance amount due to farmers, failing which the party would launch a Statewide dharna. Mr. Bommai told presspersons here that he would seek legal opinion to move court against the State Government on this issue. If the Government failed to respond to the matter by July 6, the party would organise a Statewide farmers' dharna in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner in all district headquarters, he said. — PTI

IAF invites applications

BANGALORE JUNE 25. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has invited applications for the post of Senior Non-Commissioned Officer in Education Instructor Trade from unmarried men born between August 1, 1977 and January 1, 1985. The candidates should be graduates with degree or diploma in education from a recognised university with a minimum of 50 per cent aggregate marks or B.A. (Hons), B.Sc. (Hons), BCA with a minimum Second Class or M.A. in English or M.Sc. in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or MCA. Eligible candidates can contact the District Employment Officer concerned or the Commanding Officer, 7 Airmen Selection Centre, 1, Cubbon Road, Bangalore - 560 001 for application and details. The last date for submission of duly filled-in applications is July 12, says an official press release.

New courses from IGNOU

MANGALORE JUNE 25. Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has introduced new postgraduation and degree courses for 2004-05 academic year, a press release issued here said. The courses will begin from August. They are M.A. in English, Hindi, History, and Political Science; M.Com. in International Business Organisation; and undergraduate and postgraduate course in Tourism Management, Library and Information Science, and Social Work. Details can be had from IGNOU Study Centres.

Scholarships, books

BANGALORE JUNE 25. The Department of Sainik Welfare and Resettlement, Bangalore, has invited applications from the children of ex-servicemen for grant of scholarship or book grant for 2004-05. For applications and other details, the interested candidates can contact the jurisdictional offices of the department after July 1. The last date for submitting the applications is September 30, according to a pressnote.

Admissions open for NITK

MANGALORE JUNE 25. The National Institute of Technology, Karnataka (NITK), at Surathkal has notified that the admissions for engineering, pharmacy, and architecture courses in the institute and other deemed universities would be conducted through AIEEE. Off-campus online counselling will begin on Saturday. Eligible candidates can log on to the Central Counselling Board on www.ccb.nic.in. Interested candidates can make use of the internet facility at NITK, Surathkal between June 26 and July 3 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. They have to approach Central Computer Centre of the institute with their AIEE admit card and identity card of their respective institutions.

Water Supply Affected

BIDAR JUNE 25. Drinking water supply to Bidar town will be disrupted for a few days as the water level in Manjra river has decreased.

According to a press release, water had been released into the supply barrage in Janawada from the Karanja reservoir on June 22.

There is a possibility of water shortage in some parts of the town until water reaches the barrage, the release said.

Competition

GULBARGA JUNE 25. The District Science Centre here will conduct a District Level science quiz for high school students on July 27.

A press release said that two students from each school in Yadgir and Gulbarga educational districts were qualified to participate in the competition. The competition is open to students studying in classes 8 to 10. The competition will have a written preliminary round.

The quiz would be based on general science, applications of science, and on the models at the District Science Centre. The written quiz would be held on July 21.

Schools interested in participating in the competition should send in their applications to the District Science Centre by July 15.

Lokayukta

MANGALORE JUNE 25. Udupi district has been brought under the purview of the Superintendent of Police, Lokayukta, Mangalore, according to a press release.

So far, Udupi district was under the Karwar Lokayukta office. The Government issued a notification on May 22, 2004 in this connection.

People in Udupi district can lodge complaints, if any, with the Superintendent of Police, Lokayukta, Mangalore.

Samiti's plea

Udupi June 25. The Jaya Srikrishna Parisara Premi Samiti, a non-government organisation working for the encouragement of eco-friendly industrialisation of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts, on Friday said Nagarjuna Company, which intended to set up a 1,200 MW power plant, should give an affidavit to the Deputy Commissioner that its project would be eco-friendly.

In a press release here, the convenor of the Samiti, Jayakrishna Shetty, said the Deputy Commissioner of Udupi district should not issue "no objection certificate" to the company till it fulfilled the criteria regarding environment protection.

The company should have an open discussion with the people of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts and explain to them the technology they intended to use.

Killed

VENOOR JUNE 25. A motorist was killed and another person injured when a lorry rammed their scooter at Ganadabettu village on Venoor-Naravi Road near here on Friday.

The police said the victim, Sadashiva Acharya (30), who was riding the scooter, died on the spot when he came under the rear wheel of the lorry.

The pillion rider, Srinivas Acharya, suffered minor injuries. The Venoor Police are investigating.

Dead

MANGALORE JUNE 25. A 40-year-old man, who reportedly consumed poison on Thursday, died at the Wenlock Hospital here on Friday. He was said to be suffering from a severely debilitating disease. The police gave the name of the man as Poovappa Poojary (40).

Depression because of the illness is said to be the reason for him to end his life. The Venoor Police have registered a case. Investigation is on.

Camp

MANGALORE JUNE 25. A 10-day yoga camp for women will be held from July 1 at the Raghavendra Complex, organised by the Viveka Jagratha Balaga, according to a press release.

`Heart Connect' launched

Bangalore June 25. "Heart Connect", a telemedicine initiative of Wockhardt Hospitals, Bangalore, was launched at Goa Medical College on Friday. With this, telemedicine connectivity has been established between the medical college and the Bangalore-based Wockhardt Hospital and Heart Institute. This is to be followed by connectivity with Wockhardt's speciality hospitals in Mumbai. "This is a big step for healthcare in Goa and one of the most unique telemedicine initiatives in the country," said the Goan Minister for Health, Labour and Social Welfare, Suresh Amonkar. As part of this association, a highly reputed team of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and anaesthesiologists of Wockhardt will be available online to the faculty of Goa Medical College on a daily basis. They will discuss complex cases and provide the medical students case studies in interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery. "The telemedicine services gives us access to view online in Bangalore all the critical diagnostic parameters of patients like ECGs, Xrays and investigation reports. This will help us discuss patient treatment with doctors in Goa whenever required by them,'' said Ranganath Nayak, Interventional Cardiologist, Wockhardt Heart Institute.

Results on Net

Mysore June 25. The results and marks of the B.A/B.Sc/B.Com and BFA examinations conducted by the University of Mysore during April and May 2004 are available on the university website, according to a press release.

This is for the first time that the university has provided the results and marks on the website for the benefit of students. The address is http://www.uni-mysore.ac.in. Marks cards have been sent to the respective colleges.
