Charity match for Vivek Singh

NEW DELHI, JUNE 25. A galaxy of former hockey stars will come together to play a charity match here on July 7 to raise funds for their mate Vivek Singh who is battling for life in a Mumbai hospital. Vivek, suffering from cancer, is an Olympian.

Mohammad Shahid, the driving force behind these matches, announced on Friday the match will be played at the Shivaji Stadium between Olympian XI and a women's team selection consisting of star players.

"This is a noble cause and I appeal to the public to come and help a needy sportsman in a big way. The issue is not money but support for Vivek's family. It pains me to see my former mate in this condition because I have known Vivek as a gutsy centre-half who played hockey like a champion. I want people to know that he has two daughters and it is our duty to look after Vivek's family. He served the nation with distinction and it is now our turn to help him and his family,'' said an emotional Shahid.

Speaking on the occasion, Zafar Iqbal also pleaded for more and more emotional and financial support for Vivek. Shahid and Zafar praised the efforts of the Hockey Journalists Association in this direction. "You have done a wonderful job in bringing Vivek's pitiable condition into the limelight. The media has done its bit,'' said Shahid.
