BANGALORE, JUNE 25. The officials of the Anti-Corruption Cell of the Central Bureau Of Investigation (CBI) on Friday conducted surprise checks at five health institutions of the Union Government in Bangalore as part of its nation-wide operations. Sources in the CBI told The Hindu that the checks were conducted at the National Institute of Communicable Diseases and the National Institute of Tuberculosis on Bellary Road, HAL Hospital, the office of the Additional Director-General of Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) and the office of the Welfare Commissioner on Miller's Road. The Welfare Commissioner's office deals with the procurement and supply of drugs and equipment to hospitals under the Union Government which have been established for beedi and mining sector workers. The sources said the checks were conducted following complaints of corrupt practices in these institutions. They said no case was booked nor was anyone arrested during the operation. "We require the State Government's permission to book cases and to arrest employees of the Central Government undertakings in the State," the sources said.
