BANGALORE, JUNE 26. The Agriculture Department has decided to appoint 250 agricultural assistants on contract, according to the Agriculture Minister, K. Srinivas Gowda. Addressing presspersons here on Friday, he said the vacant posts of agricultural assistants would be filled soon and those appointed would be posted at the hobli level. The Government would introduce legislation in the coming Budget session to prevent encroachments upon tanks and clear the encroachments with a view to store more water. Efforts would be made to intensify measures initiated to recharge the groundwater level, he said. The Government would set up an agriculture development corporation to implement projects. Efforts were on to mobilise funds to set up the corporation in a few months. The Government would release Rs. 62 crore to supply seeds at 50 per cent subsidy to farmers for kharif sowing. It would encourage organic farming policies introduced by the previous Government. Importance would be given to drip irrigation in drought-prone districts. The department's strategy was to cover all horticultural crops under drip irrigation in the next two years, the Minister said. Mr. Gowda said raitha seva kendras would be involved in the preparation of district-specific plan for the growth of agriculture. A committee headed by the former Development Commissioner, J.K. Arora, had been constituted to recommend measures to reach the benefits of research to farmers. Mr. Gowda said there was demand for tobacco grown in the State in the global market. To increase the area under tobacco cultivation, incentives would be given to growers. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, had met the Union Commerce Minister, Kamal Nath, and apprised him of the problems being faced by tobacco growers in the State. He said the Government would promote contract farming in the interests of farmers.
