Jharkhand boys on target

By Our Sports Reporter

MEERUT, JUNE 26. Jayant Talukdar led the charge as three archers from Jharkhand made it to the top four at the end of the FITA round at the selection trials for the Junior World archery championships, at the Sports Stadium here on Saturday.

Talukdar scored in excess of 300 in all the four rounds in the FITA event to take the top position with world-class score of 1317. Andhra Pradesh's N. Ravinder was second at 1299 while Provat Kandir (1273) and Rahul Banerjee (1271) took the third and fourth positions respectively.

In the women's section, the Uttar Pradesh archers took the top three positions, all being the trainees of the famous Gurukul Prabhat Aashram. Sushma and Ranu tied in the aggregate scores with 1257 points each. Jharkhand's Laxmi Majhi (1244) was fourth.Junior international Sumangala produced a below-par show, finishing third at the end of the FITA round. Though she made charge in the final 30m round, her aggregate score of 1256 fell one short of the score achieved by her team-mates, Sushma and Ranu.

Sumangala's performance on Saturday was a clear indication that the archer was fatigued after three days of gruelling Olympic qualification tournament. The final Olympic round for the Athens qualification will be played on Sunday afternoon.
