Ivanchuk bows out

TRIPOLI, JUNE 26. The Moscow World championship finalist Vassily Ivanchuk could not defend himself against Rustom Kasimdzhanov in the tie-break and is out of the World chess championship.

Similarly, young Grandmaster Rajdabov, who also drew both his third round games against his French opponent Etienne Barcot, again drew his first rapid game but came back aggressively to win the second beating the Frenchman 2.5, 1.5.

Valeri Fillipov playing against Grischuk Alexander in the tie-break drew both the rapid games and also held Grischuk in the 5-minute Blitz games. It was only in the sudden death that Grischuk outplayed Fillipov and forced him to accept defeat.

The other tie-break game which also went to sudden death was between the two Russian Grandmasters Alexie Dreev and Sakaev Konstantin. After the scores were equal in Rapid as well as the Blitz games the sudden death rule was applied and Dreev just about managed to beat his compatriot and qualify for the fourth round.

Former World junior champion Levon Aronian initially proved too strong for Pavel Smirnov, not allowing Pavel to make an impact either in the Rapid or Blitz games. However, Aronian could not match the wits of the experienced Smirnov and lost in the sudden death.
