Municipal contract workers' convention on July 7

HYDERABAD: State-level convention of municipal contract workers will be held here on July 7 to discuss payment of minimum wages and enforcement of labour laws to them. The convention will be organised by the Andhra Pradesh Municipal Workers and Employees' Federation, according to P. Bhaskar, general secretary of the federation.

He said in a statement on Saturday that 65 per cent of works in almost all municipalities were being implemented on contract basis by hired workers, DWCRA group women, youth belonging to CMEY and Dalit Society workmen. They were not being paid minimum wages. According to the GO 524, Rs. 2,220 should be paid a month, with four CL and other national holidays. Even this was denied to contract workers, he said.

Health staff's plea to CM

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Saturday assured the Andhra Pradesh Medical Health and Vaidya Vidhana Parishad Employees' Union of regularising the services of its members if the rules permitted.

According to a press release issued by the union, Dr. Reddy also promised the union that no employee would be removed from service.

He was responding to a memorandum submitted by a delegation of the union headed by M.A. Ghafoor, CPI (M) deputy floor leader, which sought regularisation of services of the `contract' employees who were appointed, in accordance with the GO 217, in 2001, 2002 and 2003 with `100 per cent gross salary.'

The memorandum also demanded payment of pension and compassionate appointments to those employees of the Vaidya Vidhana Parishad who were appointed after 1987. It also wanted scrapping of the GOs 90 and 20 and staff transfers only after counselling.

Book released

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has released a book, `Census 2001 and human development in India' edited by M. Prasada Rao, Associate Professor, Department of Economics, Andhra University.

K. Ravi Babu, MLA from Srungavarapukota, and G. Ramachandrudu, Head of the Department, were present when Dr. Reddy released the book in his Assembly chambers, according to a press release.

Doctors' protest

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh Government Doctors' Association has protested against the posting of a non-medical person as the Commissioner of the AP Vaidya Vidhana Parishad.

In a press release issued here on Saturday, N. Krishna Reddy, president of the association, said that the post should have been given to a senior most medical officer serving at present. He welcomed the Government's decision not to post retired doctors but has also demanded withdrawal of the posting of an IAS officer to the post.

Farmers agitate for water

CUDDAPAH: Over 500 farmers staged a rasta roko on the National Highway No. 18 at Mydukur demanding release of water to the KC Canal ayacut in Cuddapah district.

Supporting the protest by the KC Canal Sadhana Samithi, the Bharatiya Janata Party leader, K. Balachandra Reddy, demanded declaration of the KC Canal catchment area drought-affected, release of water to the ayacut, waiver of bank loans and fee of students.

The Sadhana Samithi convenor, M.J. Subbarami Reddy, demanded priority to release of Srisailam water to the KC Canal ayacut. He sought earmarking of 350 tmc for the projects in Rayalaseema region and increasing the capacity of Pothireddipadu head regulator to 55,000 cusecs.

Philately exhibition

VISAKHAPATNAM: A two-day philatelic exhibition of the Department of Posts was inaugurated by the Special Officer of Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority, D. Sreenivasulu, at Maharastra Mandal here on Saturday.

The district-level exhibition and competition, being organised to promote interest in the hobby, drew 35 participants of different age groups.

Apart from the stalls, philately counters were opened where new members were enrolled and stamps sold to the collectors. A first day cover on Visakha Dairy, brought out on the occasion, was released by the dairy's Managing Director, M. Venkata Rao. The Postmaster-General, S.K. Chakrabarti, was present.

EC team for State next month

HYDERABAD: The Election Commission is deputing a team of officers to the State during the third week of July to go into the reasons for deletion of names of many voters from the voter list and to suggest remedies, according to a press release.

Complaints regarding the missing names, if any, may be filed collectively or individually at the office of the Chief Electoral Officer and Special Chief Secretary to the Government, GAD (elections), `H' block, south wing, Secretariat.

TTD's `Mahabharatham' soon

TIRUPATI: The ambitious `Kavitraya Mahabharatham' project taken up by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) is slated for release by December 2004.

The `Vyakhyana Sahitha Kavitraya Mahabharatham' is a full version of the epic with a commentary in Telugu. The TTD has already released the volumes of Adi, Sabha, Aranya and Virat parvas into the market.

Addressing the project's editorial board, the TTD Executive Officer, Ajeya Kallam, asked the members to expedite the work to get it released by December.

He was told that the volumes of `Udyoga' and `Bheeshma parvas' were ready for release and Karna and Shanti parvas would be out by Tirumala Brahmotsavams, while the entire set would be made available by 2004-end.

The EO instructed the PRO, P. Ranga Rao, to hold special expos to get its version of the famous epic closer to the public.

Seminar on ryots' suicide

KURNOOL: The Andhra Pradesh Raithu Sangham, affiliated to the CPI(M), will organise a seminar on farmers' suicides here on June 28. Taking to reporters, the Raithu Sangham leaders, T. Narasimhaiah and T. Ramakrishna said MPs, Kotla Suryaprakasa Reddy and SPY Reddy, would attend the seminar, besides agriculture officials, Lead Bank Manager and Transco officials. Mr. Narasimhaiah said a comprehensive law was needed to prevent forcible collection of interest and loans by banks and other institutions from farmers.

Entrance test to school

KURNOOL: The entrance for admission to Class V in the Boys residential Urdu school at Kallur will be conducted on July 11, according to the District Education Officer, Abdul Mannan. The last date for sending the application is June 30.

New bank counter

TIRUPATI: An ATM-cum-extension counter of Canara Bank was opened at "Srinivasam'', the TTD-run mega pilgrim amenities complex, here on Friday. The TTD trust board chairman, T.Subbirami Reddy, inaugurated the counter. S.Jayaraman, General Manager of Canara Bank, was present.

Last date extended

TIRUPATI: The last date for issue and receipt of applications for admission to PG, research, certificate and diploma courses for the Dravidian University, Kuppam, has been extended to July 10, according to a press release.

Lottery center raided

MADANAPALLE: The One Town police raided a lottery centre and arrested the nine persons for gambling and seized Rs. 2,000 from them, said SI Surendra Reddy. In another gambling case, the Two Town police arrested three persons in Balajinagar and seized Rs. 1010 from them.

Ex gratia given

MADANAPALLE: The Madanapalle sub Collector, Smita Das, on Friday, handed over ex gratia of over Rs 1 lakh to each of the families of four farmers who committed suicide.

Cases settled

KURNOOL: The Lok Adalat, chaired by the Additional Sessions Judge, R. Ramachandra Reddy, settled 21 cases at Nandyal on Saturday. Nine civil cases involving Rs 2.69 lakhs, nine motor vehicle accident cases involving Rs 3.08 lakhs and three criminal cases were settled.

Supplementary exams

KURNOOL: The Class VII supplementary examinations that started on June 22 will conclude on June 29. The answer sheets are to be deposited with the Government Girls High School, Pedda Market, here on June 30, according to a press note by the district educational officer.

Training concludes

KURNOOL: Training for 80 cooperative employees concluded here on Saturday. The District Cooperative Officer, I. Ramadevi, said the attempt was aimed at refreshing the knowledge of employees of Cooperative Act, audit and prudential norms. The District Cooperative Officer at Nalgonda, T. Muralikrishna, the principal of Rayalaseema Cooperative Training Centre at Anantapur, Sarva Reddy, the vice-principal, Chalama Raju, the CEO, Koilkuntla Town Bank, C.V. Krishna Murthy were the instructors.

Farmers take out rally

ADILABAD: Farmers of Bela mandal took out a rally at the mandal headquarter village demanding supply of seed with 90 per cent subsidy because the seed sown has been lost due to the continuing dry spell. They also demanded writing off of crop loans advanced for the current Kharif season and sanction of fresh loans. About 200 farmers from Mangrool, Kogdur, Kapsi and 10 other villages took out the rally. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the MRO listing their demands.

NTR fans stage dharna

KARIMNAGAR: Telugu Desam Party district unit leaders and NTR Fans Association members have staged a dharna in front of the RTC bus stand here on Saturday in protest against the reported demolition of a statue of N.T Rama Rao in Hyderabad. The TDP leaders -- A. Agaiah, V. Ramesh, M. Kanakaiah, K. Srinivas and others -- participated in the programme. Demanding that the Government arrest the culprits, they charged the Congress with resorting to suppressive acts against the TDP.

Sports selections

KARIMNAGAR: Nine students from Karimnagar district have been provisionally selected in the battery tests to participate in the State-level selections to be held at AP Sports School in Hakimpet, Secunderabad from July 22 to 24. In a press note here today, the District Sports Development Officer, J. Saraiah said that in the 8 years boys group G. Krishna Kumar Reddy, B. Mahesh, M. Karthik, H. Saurab; in the 9 years boys group K. Vinod Kumar, S. Vikas Charan, T. Madhu and L. Jampanna and in the 9 years girl group G. Dhanalaxmi have been selected.

Campaign against filariasis

NIZAMABAD: The Joint Collector, G.Venkatram Reddy, on Saturday launched a massive filaria eradication and drug administration programme at the district headquarters hospital here as part of the massive campaign undertaken by the State Government in which 16 districts will be covered. The District Medical and Health Officer, Krishna Rao, the district headquarters hospital Superintendent, D.L.N. Swamy, and the District Malaria Officer, Shaik Salam, attended.
