Civic chief swoons at meet

By Our Staff Reporter

CUDDAPAH, JUNE 26. The incharge Cuddapah Municipal Chairperson, Bola Padmavathi, suffered a stroke and swooned during the municipal council general body meeting on Saturday, amidst ruckus created by some members who vociferously objected to her decision to put off the meeting after moving a condolence motion.

Although Ms. Padmavathi was admitted to a nearby private hospital, the meeting continued with a senior councillor of the TDP, S. Mohiuddin Saheb, in the chair and a resolution was adopted to appoint a new legal advisor for the municipality for a three years. The meeting was plunged into pandemonium on the appointment of a legal advisor with the members split in their choice between two advocates.

When the council assembled this morning, the chairperson moved a motion condoling the death of the Adilabad Municipal Chairman, Ranga Reddy, and the members observed two-minute silence. Then, the chairperson announced postponement of the meeting, but her bid to leave the meeting hall with the minutes book was thwarted by TDP and BJP councillors, who picked up a row with her questioning the decision. When she refused to continue the meeting, heated exchanges occurred and bedlam prevailed for about half an hour.

In the melee, the chairperson resumed the meeting and after a couple of subjects on the agenda were taken up, she collapsed, all of a sudden, complaining of chest pain. About half a dozen councillors rushed her to a private hospital nearby. The other councillors dubbed it a `high drama' and demanded continuation of the meeting.

The Municipal Commissioner, S.S. Varma, told the Regional Joint Director of Municipal Administration over phone that the chairperson had announced putting off of the meeting, but did not record it in the minutes book. Subsequently the members continued the meeting with Mr. Mohiuddin Saheb in chair. A resolution was unanimously adopted to appoint an advocate, Ajay Kumar Veena, as legal advisor.
