This Day That Age
The Government of India protested to the Portuguese Legation in New Delhi on June 26 against the arrest of twenty Goans in Goa on June 18 for hoisting the Indian national flag. The Portuguese authorities have been told that India cannot continue to remain a silent spectator to the continuance of the repressive policy hitherto followed by the Portuguese authorities. The Portuguese Legation has also been informed that unless positive steps are taken towards a more realistic policy in keeping with the historical changes that have taken place, the responsibility for the consequences will rest with the Portuguese Government. June 18 was observed by the people of Goa, according to information received in Delhi, as the 8th anniversary of their freedom struggle. The Indian national flag was hoisted and "Quit Goa" posters displayed throughout Goa. Among the arrested persons was Mr. Nanda Gaitonde, the brother of Dr. Gaitonde, who was arrested and deported to Portugal in March for expressing nationalist sentiments.
