Letters to the Editor
Sir, It is now clear that Ishrat Jahan and Javed, two of the four killed in the Ahmedabad shootout, were indeed terrorists ("Ahmedabad Encounter," June 26). There was such a huge public outcry over their killings that even the media gave them sympathetic coverage. It was clear from day one that they were terrorists. People in a car fully loaded with detonators, explosives, satellite phones, arms, and ammunitions could certainly not have been heading for a picnic. Sajit Nambudiripad, Ottapalam, Kerala * * * Sir, Going by the overwhelming support Ishrat and Javed got from the media and rights activists, it looks like India will soon become a safer haven than Pakistan for terrorists. T.V. Shivananda, Koppa, Karnataka * * * Sir, If something is connected with Narendra Modi, it must be very wrong. This seems to be the new mantra of the Modi-baiters. Arta Mishra, Cuttack, Orissa * * * Sir, The issue of the killings in Ahmedabad is crucially also about respect for the law. The question is whether we recognise that the police are limited by law or accept that they can kill anyone they wish without recognising that person's rights as an Indian citizen. Shankar Gopalakrishnan, London
