Letters to the Editor
Sir, Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee complained loudly that Narendra Modi's handling, or mishandling, of the Gujarat riots in 2002 contributed to the party's defeat in the general election. But in his inaugural speech at the BJP national executive, Venkaiah Naidu made it clear that unlike other parties the BJP does not blame individuals for defeat or praise them for victory. Thus, the BJP along with the Sangh Parivar turned its collective back on Mr. Vajpayee, who, on record, remains the party's tallest leader. M.S.R. Anjaneyulu, Guntur, A.P. * * * Sir, The BJP leaders who are opposing Mr. Modi today and blaming the party's defeat on him did not utter a word when the minorities in Gujarat were experiencing the horrors of the 2002 pogrom. One thing is certain; whether or not Mr. Modi is removed, the sufferings of the victims can never be alleviated. Ritesh Parmar, Anand, Gujarat * * * Sir, The BJP resolution on rededication to Hindutva shows that it has not learnt any lesson from Verdict 2004. Instead of coming to terms with its defeat, it wants to deceive itself into believing that its debacle is retribution by the people for renouncing Hindutva . P.S. Sunil Kumar, Bhubaneshwar * * * Sir, It seems the BJP is reluctant to learn from the recent poll debacle and is trying to sugarcoat the bitter pill. Hindutva is a wornout slogan in this age of globalisation. N. Srinath, Mysore
