Reservation debate

Sir, — This refers to the debate on the desirability of reservation in the private sector. Instead of assessing the relevance of the existing reservation policy in education and employment, the proposal to extend the same to the private sector, the last bastion of meritocracy in India, is undesirable. The government, which has systematically decimated its own business by not only promoting but also pampering mediocrity, seems bent on turning India into an economic and industrial wasteland.

Ran Vijay,

Faridabad, Haryana

Sir, — Caste confers elitism and power on the `upper' castes. Over centuries, the caste system has oppressed people of the backward castes, Dalits and tribals resulting in their social exclusiveness and economic vulnerability. The cry that the reservation policy has resulted in a creamy layer is an example of the inherent prejudice of the `upper' castes. Caste is a hard fact of Indian life. As long as it is practised, there has to be reservation for communities that have been hereditarily discriminated against.

J.C. Anthony,

Sir, — Reservation might have been a solution to many problems in the past. But in today's context of globalisation and competition, reservation is a bane. It is hampering the nation's growth.

Riyaz Dar,

Pulwama, J&K

Sir, — My suggestion is that wherever there is reservation, the families which have already enjoyed the benefits and have come up economically and socially should be excluded from it.

V.L. Mohan,

Bangalore
