SALEM, JUNE 27. The Association of University Teachers (AUT), Tamil Nadu, has urged the Vice-Chancellor of the Periyar University, T. Balakrishnan, to ensure regular conduct of Senate, Syndicate and Standing Committee on Academic Affairs meetings of the University. Drawing attention to "various lapses" that occurred in the functioning of University in the past, the AUT president, N. Senthamarai, asked the Vice-Chancellor, who recently assumed charge, to conduct elections to Syndicate from teachers, principals and general constituencies and Senate from graduate constituency. Stressing the need for obtaining the University Grants Commission approval for the University, he said the VC should take steps to start new departments. The issuance of Degree certificates to students should be immediately completed. Early conduct of convocation, streamlining the examination system, appointment of Director for Distance Education, regularisation of affiliations, re-instatement of terminated employees and periodical meetings with representatives of teachers' organisations were some of the other suggestions.
