Archery
By Our Sports Reporter
MEERUT, JUNE 27. Tarundeep Rai and Dola Banerjee sustained five National ranking tournaments before they seized the top positions in the men and women's sections to make it to the Indian team to the Athens Olympic Games. Rai aggregated 616.04 points, while Dola had 293.04 points to her credit after the final Olympic round at the National Olympic qualification tournament at the Sports Stadium here on Sunday. Satyadev Prasad and Majhi Sawaiyan were the other men archers who made it to the top three and confirmed their tickets to Athens. In the women's section, Dola will have Reena Kumari and Sumangala in the team. Earlier, Shivnath Nagesia capped his brilliant form winning the third Olympic round, but it came a little too late for the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) archer. Nagesia, who started from the sixth position on the National rankings, retained his position, as the Olympic berth was way out of his grasp. Tarundeep Rai salvaged some pride for himself beating the in-form Satyadev Prasad 110-106 in the play-off for the third-place. If Rai and Prasad's loss in the semifinals was unexpected, junior archer N. Ravinder showed how fickle an archer could be under pressure. Ravinder gave an improved performance in the Olympic qualification after having assured his place in the team for the junior World championships. Ravinder caused the biggest upset of the day beating Athens-bound Majhi Sawaiyan in the second round. Both the archers were tied 159-159 and in the tie-breaker, Sawaiyan crumbled under pressure. Ravinder shot 10 and 8 while Sawaiyan managed 10 and 7. There was hardly any surprise in the women's section though. Dola Banerjee, as usual, kept her stranglehold over the field, winning the third Olympic round by nine points. In the final, Dola was up against Chekravolu Swuro, the key member of the team that earned Olympic berth at the 2003 New York World championship. Dola kept an upper hand from the start before closing the issue at 111-102. Chekravolu's inconsistent form effectively shut her out of the Olympic team. Jayant, Sushma top rankings Jayant Talukdar and Sushma led the boys and girl's rankings in the junior selection trials being conducted for the London World championship. Despite winning just one Olympic round, Talukdar consolidated his position at the top with a consistent show. His top finish in the FITA round on Saturday, and the points earned from the first selection trials in Kolkata, helped Talukdar to the top spot. Also making it to the boy's team for the July 19-25 World championships were Rahul Banerjee, N. Ravinder and Provat Kandir. Sushma, with 83 points, topped the girl's section while Sumangala, Ranu, Laxmi Majhi and Runu Swargary finished in that order. Since Sumangala had already qualified for the Olympics team, the fifth-placed Runu was the lucky archer to get the berth for World championship. India has qualified in the girl's section of the Junior World championship for the first time.
