4 killed in bus-lorry collision

MADURAI, JUNE 27. Four persons, including three women, were killed and 31 others injured in a bus-lorry collision at Ladanendhal in Sivaganga district early today.

According to the police, a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus proceeding to Rameswaram from Madurai, collided head-on with a salt-laden lorry shortly after 3.30 a.m. The bus driver, M. Tamilarasan (46) of Madurai, G. Pichaimari (46) of Karur, R. Porkodi alias Sangeetha (43) of Theni and an unidentified middle-aged woman died on the spot, 31others, including eight women, sustained injuries.

The highway patrol vehicle and ambulances from the Emergency Accident Relief Centres shifted the victims to hospitals in Madurai. The Sivaganga Superintendent of Police, Anand Kumar Somani, visited the spot and supervised the operations. "It appears that the lorry driver encroached into the bus lane leading to the accident. We have ordered a detailed investigation," Mr. Somani told The Hindu.
