Manpower racket busted, one held at airport

CHENNAI, JUNE 27. Chennai Airport Immigration authorities have busted an organised international manpower racket, arresting a Chennai-based operator yesterday, when he tried to board a Jet Airways flight to Colombo from the Anna International Terminal (AIT).

An airport source said, Easwar Subbiah alias Muthukrishnan, a resident of Mannady in North Chennai, operated with a close associate, Jayaraman, as a major syndicate for sending people to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Colombo.

Acting on a specific tip-off that Subbiah would come to the AIT on Saturday, a specially-formed squad was monitoring his movements. Shortly after completing the check-in formalities,

Subbiah was detained at the immigration clearance point and interrogated. He admitted to having sent out people by using a novel modus operandi.

The sources explained that he always sent persons with two tickets — one on an international sector and the other to a domestic destination but operating out of international terminal at almost the same time.

At the last minute, the cleared passenger with international immigration departure seal boarded the domestic sector one and returned to Chennai by train or other means of transportation. Passport of such passengers are utilised for impersonation for sending people to international destinations as it had valid departure airport immigration seal.

The source said Subbiah, holding a valid Indian passport, has been handed over to the Meenambakkam airport police. A case under the Passport Act has been filed. Jayaraman is at large.
