JD(S) leaders demand equal share in nominations

By Our Staff Correspondent

D. Manjunath, Minister for Higher Education, was felicitated in Chitradurga on Sunday.

CHITRADURGA, JUNE 27. Senior Janata Dal (Secular) leaders have demanded an equal share in all nominations and appointments to the various boards, corporations, and committees at the taluk and district level.

Addressing a rally of party workers held to congratulate D. Manjunath, Minister for Higher Education, here on Sunday, the party leaders urged the high command to protect the interests of party workers to rebuild a robust organisation.

H. Ekanthaiah, former minister, was not very optimistic about the coalition government's future. "Differences between the two parties are bound to crop up and they will turn into conflicts. We need to strengthen our party on the fundamental philosophy of being equally distant from both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)," he said. He said that the party needed to organise itself against the Congress, even though it was a part of the coalition government. "We should include the promises made in our manifesto into the State's Common Minimum Programme (CMP)," he said. The former Minister, Thippeswamy, alleged that the tahsildar and a police officer were acting as "agents" of the local MLA and urged Mr. Manjunath to look into the matter. He also asked the Minister to cancel the nominations made to the District Central Cooperative Bank and various other district committees after the elections to woo Congress workers. "Certain members of the zilla panchayat wanted to oust the panchayat president, Soubhagya Basavarajan. Her detractors (the Congress MLAs) should come forward and help resolve the crisis amicably," he said.

Mr. Manjunath said: "This Government will complete its full term. A coordination committee will be set up to help with the policy making and to sort out the differences that may crop up."

G.S. Manjunath, Ilakal Vijaykumar, and Yashodhar, leaders of the party, were present.
