Five killed as bus plunges into gorge

SOLAN, JUNE 27 . Five people were killed and 25 injured, 13 seriously, when a private bus in which they were travelling rolled down into a 150 feet deep gorge at Panch Parmashwer in Himachal Pradesh early today, police said.

The bus was on its way from Kasauli to Solan.

Four people died on the spot while the fifth succumbed to injuries on way to Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla.

The dead have been identified as Pawan Kumar, Shiv Raj Singh, driver of the bus Mukesh Kumar and Sheel Negi. The identity of the fifth victim, a Nepali labourer, could not be established.

Of the 25 injured, 10 have been shifted to the PGI Chandigarh, while four others were being taken to IGMC, Shimla.

District police chief Abhishak Trivedi rushed to the spot along with a medical team to assist in rescue operations. The State Governor, V S Kokje, and the Chief Minister, Virbhadra Singh, have expressed shock and grief at the loss of lives in the accident and conveyed their condolences to the bereaved families. Mr Singh directed the district administration to provide all possible help to the bereaved families and medical treatment to the injured.

Himachal BJP spokesman Rajiv Bindal has also expressed grief at the tragedy.
