Programme to rehabilitate members of Sansi tribe

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JUNE 27. In a bid to sensitise and rehabilitate the members of the Sansi tribe, who allegedly indulge in bootlegging, drug peddling and other anti-social activities, the North Delhi police have launched a community programme for those residing in the Gulabi Bagh area. Some other community programmes have also been started in South, South-West and North-West Delhi.

The programme named "Vishwas" aims to involve members of the Sansi tribe in constructive activities to help them become law-abiding citizens. Under this scheme, the police have set up a study centre in a private school for children belonging to this community. At present, 17 children are being provided free-of-cost education in that school and Sansi women are being trained in tailoring with the help of the Delhi Social Welfare Department.

The police said such a step was being taken to make the women of this community economically independent without indulging in anti-social activities. Earlier on several occasions, the Sansi women have been found indulging in bootlegging, manufacturing of illicit liquor and even drug peddling. In order to make the programme a success, retired Government officers and non-government organisations (NGOs) have extended their support to the local police.

Launched on the International Prohibition Day on June 26, another community programme started by the Mukherjee Nagar police of North-West Delhi aims to educate people addicted to liquor about its ill effects. Under this programme, the police are trying to dissuade people from taking liquor. The police have also prepared a list of people who have vowed to give up drinking. The beat constables of respective areas have been directed to keep a check on them at regular intervals.

The South-West Delhi police have launched a "Security Mela" and a servant verification programme at Vasant Vihar in the wake of the gruesome murder of Lieutenant General Harnam Singh Seth and his wife this past week. Under the programme, the police are informing the residents primarily senior citizens living away from their children about various security measures for avoiding such incidents in future. They are being persuaded to install security gadgets readily available in the market. The residents are also being educated about the benefits of servant verification.

Meanwhile, the South Delhi police held a meeting with the elderly citizens of New Friends Colony to inform them about measures to be taken for their personal safety. They were also provided contact numbers of their area police officers for use in emergency.
