CHENNAI, JUNE 27. In what the city police termed a piece of `sustained investigation,' a 27-year-old man who allegedly murdered his wife at a lodge at Parry's corner here last year was arrested yesterday. According to the police, Anandan, a native of Varadarajanpettai in Perambalur district, married Jasmine Mary (21), a construction worker, disregarding her parents' protests. But their married life turned sour when Anandan decided to re-marry. Realising that his wife would be a stumbling block, the police said, Anandan, through one of his friends, rented a room at the lodge where she was strangulated to death. At a press conference held at the Esplanade police station today, the Joint Commissioner of Police (North and Central), C. Sylendra Babu, said when the investigation started last year the police were constrained by the lack of clues from the scene of crime. ``When the woman's body was found at the lodge we could not collect any lead from the scene, even the identity of the victim was mysterious,'' he said. ``We then decided to trace the victim's identity based on the jewellery which she wore at the time of her death.'' The jewellery was eventually traced to a shop at Jayakondam. The police then issued notices and advertisements in the locality and nearby areas requesting the public to provide information about the victim. The victim's brother contacted the police a few weeks ago informing that Anandan had re-married and that the whereabouts of his sister were not known. He also filed a habeas corpus petition in the Madras High Court. Based on the information provided, the police arrested Anandan from Varadarajanpettai. The police are on the lookout for three others.
