Vijayawada
By Our Special Correspondent
VIJAYAWADA, JUNE 27. Expressing concern over the reports of irregularities in various works taken up by the Vijayawada, Guntur, Tenali, Mangalagiri - Urban Development Authority, the district unit of the Telugu Desam Party has demanded that the Government order a judicial probe into the UDA affairs to bring out the facts. Speaking to reporters here on Sunday, the TDP spokesman, T. Premnath, and others alleged that some officials as well as political leaders had allegedly misappropriated huge amounts in the name of taking up greenery development, purchase of furniture and vehicles and allotting lands in the weaker sections colonies to profit-making private institutions. The leasing out of the common site in the Payakapuram weaker sections colony for a private educational institution, for instance, was a glaring example of the misuse of their positions by the officials to do favours to private persons. While any decision pertaining to the use of common area should be taken after obtaining the consent of the UDA governing council, the land was leased out to a private institution without following the prescribed formalities. The UDA's decision to spend Rs. 3 lakhs on greenery development in its premises where there was hardly any space was another instance of misappropriation of funds by the officials. Moreover, the reports indicated that several works were taken up while the model code of conduct was in force during the recent elections, they said. In view of this, there was need for conducting a comprehensive judicial probe to bring out the facts, they added.
