dated June 29, 1954: Chou En-lai's hope

The Chinese Prime Minister, Mr. Chou En-lai said in New Delhi on June 27 that "the further strengthening of unity between China and India as the principal nations in Asia for the cause of peace would improve the chances of success of the Geneva Conference." When the millions of people of India and China demand that they should unite and stand together, "the enormous strength for safeguarding peace is immeasurable," he said, replying to an address of welcome presented to him at a reception on behalf of the citizens of Delhi. Attended by over a thousand special guests including Prime Minister Nehru, the reception was held at the all-marble Diwan-e-Khas in the historic Red Fort. The youthful-looking 56-year-old Chinese leader smilingly folded his hands to acknowledge the cheering of the crowd as he arrived at this monument, where the Moghul Emperors used to hold "durbars" to receive distinguished foreign visitors. He took his seat along with Mr. Nehru in the front corridor of the Diwan-e-Khas with the white marble pedestal of the Peacock Throne behind him. In his reply to the address of welcome, the Chinese leader said: "We have come here with the friendship of the Chinese people for the Indian people. We have come here with the Chinese people's strong desire for safeguarding peace. Here again we can feel an equally strong desire for safeguarding peace on the part of the Indian people. From the people of Delhi and their leaders we get the common feeling of all people of India to uphold Indian-Chinese friendship and to safeguard world peace."
