KAKINADA, JUNE 28. The World Bank has chosen the Centre for development of women (CEDOW), a voluntary organisation striving for women empowerment here, for implementation of the project for creating awareness among adolescent girls on hygiene, health and nutrition. The World Bank has sanctioned $ 20,000 towards the cost of the project, which is to be launched on July 15. Briefing the modalities of the scheme at a press conference here on Sunday, Aluri Vijayalakshmi , Chairperson of the CEDOW, said the project would cover 800 adolescent girls studying in the SC and BC residential schools in Kakinada and five surrounding mandals besides equal number of women in rural areas. She said awareness would be created among the adolescent girls on human sexuality, hygiene, health and nutrition, as well as social aspects of gender bias and gender violence and through them reach the rural women in their communities. Dr. Vijayalakshmi said that imparting sexual education to adolescent girls in rural areas had proved successful in their experimental trials. While this is innovative by itself, she said the uniqueness of the project was to carry it forward to rural communities. R.Audinarayanarao, honorary chairman of CEDOW, said that the World bank had received as many as 1,500 applications for sanction of various projects under their `India development market place' scheme.
