Waste treatment: team to visit Bangalore plant

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, JUNE 28 . A team of Kochi Corporation officials led by the Mayor, C.M. Dinesh Mani, will visit Bangalore as part of the civic body's effort to finalise the project to set up a solid waste management project in the city.

The Corporation team will leave for Bangalore on July 1. They will visit the solid waste management unit set up by the Karnataka Compost Development Corpora tion.

The 10-member Corporation team consists of the members of the expert committee formed by the civic body for setting up the project. The team would study the functioning of the 300-tonne unit set up in Bangalore. The trip is also intended to sort out the question of setting up decentralised units as suggested by some of the expert committee members. Though some of the committee members are of the view that decentralised units need to be set up for treatment of solid waste generated from the city, many of the civic administrators are reportedly opposed to this proposal. They fear that the setting up of more solid waste treatment units in the city would give rise to `unnecessary issues', including public resistance.

Guntur municipal councillors arrived.

A 28-member team of municipal councillors from Guntur, Andhra Pradesh today reached Kochi to study the poverty alleviation programmes and decentralised planning process implemented in the city. The team members were accorded a reception at the council hall. The Mayor, Dinesh Mani, and the Deputy Mayor, A.V. George, were among those who attended.

Education awards distributed

The Corporation today honoured the top rank-holders in the SSLC and Higher Secondary exams. Gold medals were presented to the rank-holders at a meeting held here. The Ernakulam MP, Sebastian Paul, presented the awards to the students. The Corporation also presented new clothes to 15 inmates of the Palluruthy Sneha Bhavan who passed SSLC exam.
