Two-shift system for overhead tanks sought

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, JUNE 28. The Overhead Water Tank Operators' Association in the Union Territory and also municipal and panchayat workers of Karaikal adopted a joint action plan at a meeting here on Sunday focusing on the workers' demands.

The secretary of the association based at Pondicherry, K. Saravanan, said in a communication today that a number of announcements made in the Assembly a year ago had not been implemented by the Local Administration Department.

The action plan calls for overhead tanks to be operated under the two-shift system and for casual workers to be made daily wage employees as promised in the Assembly. There was a move on the part of the government to hand over the operation and control of the overhead tanks to the Public Works Department. In that event the workers should be absorbed by the PWD.

Sanctioning of weekly holidays and festival holidays, payment of wages to workers engaged on daily wage basis on par with that of their counterparts in government departments and according of government employees' status to tank operators in the municipalities or panchayats after completion of one year in service were some of their demands.

The workers plan to take out a rally to the Assembly on July 5.
