Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JUNE 28. The Pondicherry Agriculture Minister, A. Namassivayam, today asked the Department of School Education to ensure that government schools in semi urban areas and villages had English medium sections at the primary level. Declaring open a new campus of the Tiru Vee Kaa Government High School at Arumbathpuram near here, Mr. Namassivayam said since private schools in villages offered English medium education, villagers were putting their children in such schools. The government would provide pukka buildings to all government schools, Mr. Namassivayam said, adding that thatched classrooms would be replaced with permanent structures in a phased manner. The school at Arumbathpuram lacked teachers to handle Mathematics and Science, he said. Steps would be taken to post adequate staff, as the first batch of students would appear for the Standard X (SSLC) examination in March 2005. The Secretary to Education Department, B.V. Selvaraj, said the department had originally estimated spending on the new campus at Rs. 40 lakhs. But judicious planning and designing had brought down the cost to Rs. 30 lakhs. On the problem of students finding it difficult to get admission to Plus One courses, he said the government was considering building more classrooms or introducing shifts to solve it. Mr. Selvaraj said the government was keen on ensuring quality education, and the teacher training institution (DIET) was now focusing on this.
