Sentence against man upheld

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, JUNE 28. The Karnataka High Court on Monday upheld the order of a trial court sentencing a native of Shimoga to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 5,000.

The appellant, Hanumanth Singh, had three children. He had doubts about the paternity of the youngest son, Rakesh. When the child was five years old, Singh said Rakesh did not resemble him.

Rakesh was sent away to Hubli. On February 10, 1998, Rakesh returned to Shimoga to attend a fete. When he was playing with his friends, Hanumanth Singh took him away and threw him into a well.

The Sessions Court of Shimoga sentenced Hanumanth Singh to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000. Hanumanth Singh appealed against the lower court order.

A Division Bench comprising Justice Manjula Challur and Justice Mohan Shantanagouder upheld the lower court order.

Dismissed

Justice S.R. Bannurmath upheld the order of a lower court and dismissed an appeal by the Government.

The lower court had acquitted Mansoor of Gangenahalli and Afroz of Siddapura of the charge of selling narcotics.

The city police had booked Mansoor and Afroz under the Narcotics, Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

The State said the accused were nabbed on September 2, 2000 when they were selling narcotics from a house in Byrasandra.
