Uttar Pradesh
By Gargi Parsai
NEW DELHI, JUNE 28. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, today met the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and sought a special economic package for the State. Later speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Yadav described the visit as a "courtesy call" as he had not met the Prime Minister after Mr. Manmohan Singh took charge. Mr. Yadav said he sought the package besides other economic relief to farmers and weaker sections in society in the budget to be presented on July 8. The demands include cheaper fertilizer rates, unemployment allowance for youth and admission for poor and meritorious students in prestigious management institutes on nominal fees. Asked about the cost of the package, he said it was yet to be worked out. The State was backward and there had been no development for the last eight-and-a-half years. "The State lacks proper roads, power and water."Mr. Yadav declined to comment on the ongoing controversy over the removal of Governor, Vishnukant Shastri. Asked about the row with the Congress, he said, "from our side there is no confrontation."
