Three injured in ABVP-SFI clash

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUNE 28. Three activists of the Students Federation of India (SFI), including the son of the CPI (M) leader, E. P. Jayarajan, were injured when SFI and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists clashed outside the Mar Ivanios College at Nalanchira this evening.

The police identified the injured persons as Jijith Raj, son of Mr. Jayarajan, Vipin and Praveen. All are students of Mar Ivanios College.

The police are looking for one Saranath, an ABVP activist and student of the same college, in connection with the attack. According to police, seven persons, some of them wielding swords, were involved in the attack. The police suspect them to be either Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) or Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists from the Peroorkada area. An official said efforts were on to trace the accused. The police said political enmity could be the motive for the attack.

The police said there is also an allegation that the attack had some connection with a recent dispute between a group of students over some other students passing comments at a girl studying in the same college.

The Peroorkada police have registered a case of causing grievous hurt, rioting, unlawful assembly and assault in connection with the incident. The injured students were admitted to the Medical College Hospital.
