A hot chase at dawn

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JUNE 28. A 22-year-old man who was allegedly involved in stealing stereos and other accessories from cars parked at Bengali Market in New Delhi was arrested by the New Delhi police after a brief chase in the wee hours of Monday.

According to the police, residents of Bengali Market had complained to the local police that the windowpanes of their cars had been broken and stereos, rubber beading and other accessories stolen in the past few days. A police team was deployed to trace the culprit.

In the wee hours of Monday, the police team spotted a young man entering the central lane of Bengali Market after jumping the railway boundary wall. When he began breaking the windowpanes, Constable Ram Singh, who was deployed there, chased the man and almost caught him when he injured him with a knife. The man then jumped over the boundary wall and began running along the track. Constable Ram too jumped over the wall but sustained injuries in his legs. However, he did not stop and managed to overpower the man and recovered the knife from him. He was identified as Onkar, a resident of Mau district in Uttar Pradesh. He did not have any accommodation in the Capital.

During interrogation, Onkar allegedly confessed to having been involved in at least four cases of stealing accessories from the vehicles and damaging them since April. Further investigations in the case are on.
