`Banks need to recruit more players'

HYDERABAD, JUNE 29 . Several of the top cricket players and officials here expressed their dismay at the present policy being followed by most of the banks in the state of denying jobs to sportspersons under the sports quota.

In a statement released to the media here today, present and former players such as V.V.S. Laxman, Venkatapathy Raju, M.V. Sridhar, Rajesh Yadav, Vijay Mohan Raj and Shivlal Yadav, expressed the apprehension that talented players may be forced to drop out of the game and thereby the standard may fall drastically in future if banks do not recruit cricket players. In the past banks used to provide the bulk of the employment opportunities for cricket players but this was no longer the case.

"We are sorry to note that for the last ten years recruitment of sportsmen under the sports quota is not taking place. The result is that the performance of the teams in various tournaments is deteriorating. We request the banks to note seriously the implications of such a policy. We request them to again start recruitment under sports quota. Otherwise lot of youngsters with talent will be deprived of job opportunities. The ban is making budding stars disappointed and lost interest in sports. The banks should note that wide publicity is given to the sport and the players and this will help them in their businesses," the statement read.
