Upadhya happy about Indians' show

BANGALORE, JUNE 29. T.G. Upadhya, The lone Indian umpire at the Commonwealth table tennis championship had more than one reason to be happy about his maiden international assignment. The Indian paddlers' sterling performances at Kuala Lumpur made the trip a very memorbale one for him and it drew lavish praises from Upadhaya.

"It was a memorable feat and never in our history, we had won an indvidl gold (Sharat Kamal) and team gold. The team did extremely well, exceeding all our expectations", said Upadhya.

The Indian haul included gold in men's singles by Sharat Kamal, silver by Soumyadeep Roy, bronze in women's doubles by Mouma Das and Poulomi Ghatak, gold in the men's team event.

Upadhya praised Sharat Kamal for his outstanding effort in winning the men's singles. "Sharat is a classy player and he has proved his international credentials beyond doubt. He went down to veteran Alan Cooke of England in the men's team event, but bounced back to beat him in the Open event. Soumyadeep too was in superb form. The only loss that he suffered was in the open singles final to Sharat Kamal. He was bedrock of consistency for the Indian team'' said Upadhya.
