New diesel electric multiple unit to be launched

CHENNAI, JUNE 29. The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) here is launching on Thursday a ``high horsepower diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) with aerodynamic front-end,'' the first of its kind in the Indian Railways.

The new DEMU will reduce wind resistance and thereby improve adhesion and efficiency. It will also enhance the aesthetic appearance of coaches and enable the ICF to compete in the global market.

Many passenger-friendly features such as ergonomically-designed seats with moulded foam cushion, stainless steel partitions and grab rails, stainless steel luggage racks, central duct lighting and a pubic address system have been provided.

The Minister of State for Railways, R.Velu, will formally inaugurate the new DEMU, according to an ICF release.
