Letters to the Editor
Sir, It is true that quality is not the preserve of the forward castes (Letters, June 30). But is that not all the more reason for discontinuing reservation?
M.N. Niranjan,
Poverty and backwardness can certainly not be tackled by reserving a few seats in education and employment. It does no good to the actual `poor'; it only aggravates the problems of caste.
Srinivas Goparaju,
Sir, Reservation is the process of tapping the inherent talent of people who have been oppressed and suppressed for years. It does not pave the way for degrading merit and compromising quality.
K. Tharanipathi,
Sir, Private companies receive sops like subsidised land, power and other amenities from the Government. Why then can they not keep a share of jobs for the socially backward?
Mark-based system of deciding merit has prevented the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes from getting jobs in the private sector. The public sector too has failed to create more job opportunities. In such a situation, reservation in the private sector is a must.
Vishal Jadhav,
