Tight security for car festival
Kandadevi (Sivaganga district) June 30 . Security has been beefed up in Sivaganga district for tomorrow's Kandadevi Sornamurtheeswarar Temple car festival. Armed pickets have been posted on all roads leading to Kandadevi and Devakottai. The festival has become a contentious issue since 1998 following a dispute over the participation of Dalits. The district administration is taking steps to conduct the festival in a smooth manner. Revenue and police officials have already held peace meetings. Under the direct monitoring of the Inspector-General of Police (South Zone), Rajendran, 2,000 policemen from Madurai, Dindigul, Theni, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Kanyakumari and Sivaganga have been deployed at and around Devakottai. The Superintendent of Police, Anand Kumar Somani, told The Hindu that personnel from the Tamil Nadu Special Police and the Armed Reserve Police had cordoned off 15 ``problematic'' areas. The Collector, Anand Patil, said the administration would abide by the directions of the High Court and the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department in conducting the festival. The proceedings would be videographed.
Snag delays flight
TIRUCHI JUNE 30. The Sharjah -Thiruvananthapuram-Tiruchi-Chennai flight (IC 968) suffered a 12-hour delay due to a technical snag today. It arrived here at 4.30 a.m. A team, arrived by the Madurai-Chennai flight, which was diverted via Tiruchi, attended to the snag. It later took off at 4.00 p.m., according to official sources. The passengers of the early morning flight were accommodated in IC 994 Kuwait-Fujairah-Calicut-Tiruchi-Chennai flight, which departed at 11.55 a.m., sources said.
Flight delayed
At Coimbatore, Indian Airlines Flight IC 975 on the Chennai-Coimbatore-Kochi- Sharjah sector was delayed by nearly three hours at the airport today following a technical snag. The flight, which arrived at 3.55 p.m., could not take off at the scheduled departure time of 4.40 p.m. It took off around 7.30 p.m. after the snag was set right, IA sources said.
New social welfare board chief
CHENNAI June 30. C.R. Saraswathi, former actress, has been appointed chairperson, the Tamil Nadu Social Welfare Board, Chennai. The appointment was made in concurrence with the Central Social Welfare Board, said an official release.
300 litres of arrack destroyed
Krishnagiri June 30. Nearly 300 litres of illicit arrack was destroyed, following a raid in Krishnagiri on Tuesday. The Prohibition Enforcement Wing arrested 13 persons, including five women, for brewing the arrack.
Course for U.S-bound students
CHENNAI June 30. The United States Educational Foundation will organise a pre-departure orientation session for Fall 2004 students in the city on July 9. U.S-bound students who have been issued with visas can attend the programme, said a release. Registration will be on a first-come-first-served basis. Contact: 2811 2049
Last date for applications
CHENNAI June 30. The last date for receiving the filled-in application forms for B.Ed entrance examination by the Indira Gandhi National Open University Regional Centre (Chennai), has been extended up to July 10. Forms are available for sale at the centre till July 9, said a varsity release.
Madras varsity results today
CHENNAI June 30. The results of B.E/B.Tech/M.Sc (non-semester/semester), except biotechnology and bioinformatics degree examinations, April 2004, of the Madras University will be published on July 1. The results can also be accessed at: www.unom.ac.in, www.southindia.com, www.chennaionline.com, www.webulagam.com and www.chennaidarling.com.
e-filing of excise returns
CHENNAI JUNE 30. As an initiative towards providing citizen-centric information technology enabled services, the National Informatic Centre in consultation with the Central Board of Excise and Customs has designed a software for electronic filing of Central Excise returns. According to S. Subramanian, Commissioner of Central Excise, Chennai-IV Commissionerate, the assessees who opt for e-filing will be provided a user ID and password to access the site and file the return. The assessees can access the facility by logging onto http://exciseandservicetax.nic.in With a view to providing awareness, the Chennai-IV Commissionerate organised a programme on e-filing of Central Excise returns for the trade and industry today at their Nandanam office complex. Nearly 160 participants attended the programme.
High Court judge retires
CHENNAI JUNE 30. Justice K. Gnanaprakasam of the Madras High Court attained superannuation today. In his farewell address, the Advocate-General, N.R. Chandran, said, Mr. Justice Gnanaprakasam was an excellent trial lawyer and had a practical approach to every problem. Mr. Justice Gnanaprakasam became a judge, along with eight others, on June 9, 1997. Prior to that, he was a Government Pleader (writs). With his retirement, the judges' strength in the court comes down to 29, against the sanctioned strength of 42. The Chief Justice, B. Subhashan Reddy, has already recommended nine persons for elevation.
Head constable dies in accident
NAGAPATTINAM JUNE 30 . Samikannu (52), a head constable attached to Sembanarkovil police station, was knocked down by a motorcycle at Mayiladuturai two days ago. He died at the Government Hospital in Chennai today.
Kumbabishekam
Thanjavur June 30 . Hundreds of people witnessed the mahakumbabishekam of the newly-built Siva-Vishnu temple here today. The temple was constructed on the banks of Grand Anaicut canal by a philanthropist Subramany Sharma. Holy water was poured on the kalasams at 10 a.m.
Nagapattinam
Hundreds of devotees witnessed mahakumbabishekam of Sri Amothalanayagi Samedha Rathnagiriswarar Temple at Tirumarugal today. The temple was renovated at a cost of over Rs.30 lakhs after a gap of three decades.
Takes charge
Thanjavur June 30 . Ramesh Kodavala took charge as the new Deputy Inspector General of Police, Thanjavur range, here today. Previously, he was working as the DIG in Dindigul district. Hailing from Haryana, he started his career as a trainee at Kanchipuram in 1987. He had worked as Assistant Superintendent of Police, Kanchipuram, and Superintendent of Police in Kanchipuram, Tiruchi and Vellore districts.

Tiruchi June 30. Water level at the Mettur reservoir stood at 53.48 feet today. The inflow was 2025 cusecs and the discharge was 2000 cusecs.
Suicide alleged
RAJAPALAYAM JUNE 30. A 15-year-old girl, Jeyabarathi, allegedly committed suicide, consuming poison here on Tuesday evening. According to the police, the girl, admitted to the Rajapalayam Government hospital, was referred to the Virudhunagar Government Hospital, where she died. The Rajapalayam (south) police have registered a case under Section 174 of IPC (suspicious death). However, her relatives alleged that she took the extreme unable to bear "harassment" by some youths in the locality. The police are investigating.
Shop-owner fined
SRIVILLIPUTTUR JUNE 30. A judicial magistrate court today imposed a fine of Rs. 5000 on a firewood shop owner for employing child labour. According to prosecution, Navamani was caught employing an 11-year-old boy, G. Selvakumar, during a raid conducted by the Assistant Labour Inspector, J. Kalidass, at the shop of the accused here in December. The magistrate, Murugiah, who heard the case, imposed the fine for violating Section 9 (1) and (2) of the Child Labour Eradication and Regulation Act 1986.
Arrested on murder charge
SRIVILLIPUTTUR JUNE 30. A 40-year-old man, Sakthivel, was today arrested on a charge of murdering his wife, Santhi (33), following a domestic quarrel. According to the police, Sakthivel returned home at Chettiyakudi Street after one year of separation from his wife. This morning Santhi was found dead at her residence. The Srivilliputtur Town police have arrested Sakthivel.
Life sentence
ERODE JUNE 30. A 45-year-old man was awarded life sentence in a murder case. The case for the prosecution was that Govindasamy of Ayyanthottam, Moolanure, Dharapuram taluk borrowed money from Kumarasamy (75) of the same village. On August 16, 2003, Kumarasamy went to Govindasamy's house and demanded repayment of the loan. A wordy duel followed between the two and in a fit of anger, Govindasamy beat Kumarasamy to death with a stick. He then threw the body into the Nallathangal Odai. The Moolanure police recovered the body and arrested Govindasamy. The Erode District and Sessions Judge, R. Mohandass, delivered the judgment today.
Achievement
ERODE JUNE 30. The Hassanure tribal residential school in Thalawady hill area has secured cent per cent result in the recently-held SSLC examinations, said the Collector, D. Karthikeyan today. He said that 44 students appeared for the examination. Instructions had been sent to all educational institutions through the Education Department not to collect any capitation fee from the students during admission. The Parent-Teachers Association was also instructed the same.

Burgled
Krishnagiri June 30. A masked gang broke into a house in Pocchampalli and decamped with 15 sovereigns of jewellery here on Monday. Police said that Visvanathan (55), of Sandhur had gone out after locking the main door of his house when the incident occurred. The Pocchampalli police are investigating.
