HYDERABAD, JUNE 30. The Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, today offered to convene a meeting of MLAs belonging to Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, Nalgonda and West Godavari districts here on July 5 to discuss the release of water from Nagarjunasagar. The offer was made to a delegation of Congress MLAs from the Krishna delta that met Dr. Reddy to seek the release of water from Nagarjunasagar to avert damage to crops if the monsoons failed. They suggested the release of 10 tmcft of water each to the Krishna Western delta and areas served by the Left and Right Canals. The delegation pointed out that 175 tmcft of water was available in the Sagar against 145 tmcft during the same period last year, when the Government's failure to order timely release had led to crop delays and damage during a cyclone in November. Such a situation must be averted, they said. Dr. Reddy said he would ask the Major Irrigation Minister, Ponnala Lakshmaiah, to convene a preliminary meeting on Thursday to discuss the situation.
