MADURAI, JUNE 30. The Department of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment performed `Varuna japams and yagnas' at Vaishnavite temples in the city today, following monsoon failure. "Since the day's star, `Anusham', belongs to the Saturn and the `athi devathai' of the planet is Lord Vishnu, the Vaishnavite temples performed the `japams' as the day is considered auspicious," said P. Baskaran, Joint Commissioner, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment. "A special prayer was offered at Tallakulam Prasanna Venkatachalapathy Temple at 6 a.m. Varuna mantras from the Rig and Yajur Vedas were recited, besides Tamil hymns from the `Nalayira Divyaprabhandam' by the temple priests, who stood inside an artificial tank, constructed for the purpose, as the temple tank is dry, filled with water and performed the prayers. Later the `Varuna yagna' was performed, followed by several abishekams," said A.P. Sundaranarayana Bhattar, priest of Lord Kallazhagar Temple at Alagarkoil. At Alagarkoil, the prayers, led by Mr. Sundaranarayana Bhattar, were performed at `Narayana Vavi.' Special prayers were also performed at Deivanayaga Perumal Temple in Konthagai.
