BANGALORE, JUNE 30. The Mayor, P.R. Ramesh, has directed the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) engineers to expedite work on restoring Yediyur Lake. During an inspection of Yediyur and Pattabhiramnagar wards, the residents told the Mayor that work on the lake had come to a standstill. The Mayor assured the residents that the work would be completed within a month. The BMP had taken up the project at a cost of Rs. 3.25 crore. But the contractors had stopped the work half way through. The Mayor asked the Engineer-in-Chief, Ramegowda, to ensure that the pending work was completed within a month by engineers from the BMP's projects wing. Mr. Ramegowda told the Mayor that work on removing silt from the lake, raising a park on the premises, landscaping, construction of diversion channels, de-weeding and remodelling of storm water drains that carry water into the lake had to be completed. The Mayor inspected the Yediyur Maternity Home and expressed happiness over its maintenance. "All the beds here are full and patients appear to be satisfied with the treatment given here," the Mayor said. The officials told the Mayor that Dr. Smitha, the lone doctor in the hospital, was handling the labour ward, paediatrics ward, and outpatient department. As patients from neighbouring villages off Kanakapura and Bannerghatta roads also come there, the hospital needed more staff, the authorities told the Mayor.
