Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JULY 1. The management of the Pondicherry Cooperative Sugar Mills at Lingareddipalayam near here has intensified steps to save sugarcane from the attack of new type of pest called `woolly aphid.' The Managing Director of the mill, E .Vallavan, said in a release here that the pest known in Tamil as `Panju Asuwani' attacked some two years ago the sugarcane crop in Maharashtra resulting in loss of yield by 25 per cent in the cultivation of the crop. The pest attack was also noticed affecting the sugarcane in Karnataka and recently the damage caused by pest in Cuddalore district was also reported. As the pest had the capacity to spread fast, the management of the Cooperative Sugar mill here launched an extensive field survey to locate whether any part of the mill's command area was attacked by the pest and it had been seen that the field at Suttukeni near Katterikuppam in Pondicherry had the attack. There was the possibility of the yield of sugarcane going down by 25 per cent and hence before the pest spread the farmers were advised to take preventive steps.
