PONDICHERRY, JULY 1. The new Pondicherry Inspector General of Police, Prahlad Rai Meena, who took charge today, called upon the police force to be more sensitive to complaints and grievances of the public.

Addressing policemen after inspecting a guard of honour on the beach road, Mr Meena said the police were meant to serve the public and not to rule over them. "We have to come forward to help the public."

The IGP said the men would be given enough opportunity to meet him and present their ideas on how to provide better service to the public. "We will sit and plan our strategy to improve the present state of affairs." He also promised to look into their needs and hoped that together they would be able to take the police force to new heights.

He said steps would be taken to modernise the force and added that equal importance would be given to Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam regions.

He said he preferred to come and serve in Pondicherry since it was a unique place with historical importance. Mr Meena, an IPS officer belonging to the 1980 batch, hails from Rajasthan. He worked in Delhi in various branches, including law and order and security. He succeeds U.K. Katna, who has been transferred to Arunachal Pradesh on promotion.

Mr. Meena, who began his day with a visit to the Manakula Vinayakar temple where he offered prayers, also called on the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy and the Lt. Governor N N Jha.
